Flaminia Fichera – our 2020 International Student Bursary Award winner – has had to start her degree course at the University of Leeds remotely due to the restrictions in place for Covid-19.
Flaminia became the lucky winner of our £1500 bursary when she was selected from the many high quality entries received for the award and, despite initial concerns that she was going to have to postpone her degree for a year, she has now begun her Medicine and Surgery course via online learning whilst the rules make travel to Leeds from her home city of Rome difficult.
Studying medicine in the UK has long been a dream for Flaminia as her grandmother, Anna, was a paediatrician and her stories of working in the health industry were a huge influence for the Italian student. What’s more; having witnessed the work of the NHS over recent months, Flaminia became even more determined to study in the UK and ‘do her bit’ to help.
Since winning the award Flaminia has become a bit of a celebrity in Leeds having featured in the Yorkshire Post and had an interview with the local BBC radio station. We hope to see her arriving in the UK soon to meet her fellow students and start to enjoy the country she has dreamt about for so long.
