Customs regulations for shipping to Belgium

All international deliveries from the UK require customs documentation. This will be a commercial invoice. When you work with a courier service, they’ll provide these forms and help you complete them accurately.

These must be completed in detail or you risk delays in delivery or even your parcel being rejected at the border.

This means completing each section in full. For example, if you’re sending a toy as a gift to family or friends in Belgium, don’t simply write ‘toy’ on the customs form. Instead, specify ‘1 x Lego boat set’.

When importing goods to Belgium, any customs fees and import VAT will be charged to the recipient – so, it’s worth considering this if you’re looking to send valuable gifts.

This includes VAT and clearance fees for any parcels valued over 22 EUR, plus additional customs duties for packages valued over 150 EUR.

Import restrictions in Belgium

Like all nations, Belgium has unique rules when it comes to what you can and cannot import.

If you attempt to send prohibited or restricted items – which require specialised permission – you’ll either have your parcel returned to you or even destroyed at the border.

Some items that are prohibited or restricted from import to Belgium include:

  • Certain jewellery items
  • Certain artwork or collectable items
  • Parcels valued at 25,000 EUR or over

For a complete list of prohibited and restricted items, visit the Belgian postal service’s website. If you’re still unsure, contact the Belgian postal service or your courier service.

Addressing mail to Belgium

Belgium’s domestic address guidelines are similar to those in the UK.

Local addresses in Belgium feature the recipient’s name on the top line, with the street name appearing before the house number on the second line.

A 4-digit postcode then appears before the city name on the third line.

For example:

Mr Andre Dupont
Roerstraat 63
3600 Genk
BELGIUM
