CUSTOMS REQUIREMENTS FOR SRI LANKA

Before sending goods to Sri Lanka, make sure you understand the nation’s import regulations.

All deliveries to Sri Lanka from the UK require customs documentation. This will be a commercial invoice. Your courier service will be able to provide these documents for you.

These must be completed accurately to avoid delays in shipping or – at worst – your parcel being returned to you or destroyed.

Include as much detail as possible when completing customs documents. For example, don’t simply write ‘clothes’. Instead, specify ‘2 red T-shirts, made in England’. This helps speed up customs checks when your package arrives in the country.

Some packages may be exempt from customs charges – like personal effects and items intended as gifts – provided they fit Sri Lanka’s import regulations. And parcels valued under LKR 10,000 may also be exempt from import charges.

Make sure your package qualifies for the Customs Duty and VAT-free allowance by following the shipping instructions issued by the Sri Lankan Customs Department.

Key considerations:

  • Make sure you fill in the paperwork correctly (complete all sections with accurate, precise information)
  • Do not send prohibited or restricted items
  • Be precise and add enough detail – for example, rather than just saying ‘clothes’, state ‘2 x women’s cotton skirts, made in Poland’
  • Make sure you include the required licences and certificates

At PACK & SEND, we know exactly what’s required to meet the import criteria of Sri Lanka and we work closely with our customers to make sure their shipments are fully compliant.

SHIPPING RESTRICTIONS TO SRI LANKA

On top of each nation’s unique import regulations, the EU adds an extra challenge, with additional red tape to navigate.

Take time to understand exactly what items can be imported, in what quantities, and which items are prohibited. Always check restricted items and size or quantity allowances before sending, as prohibited items may be destroyed or returned to you at a charge.

For example, most weapons and firearms are prohibited, while meat, milk and dairy products are subject to restrictions, too.

If you’re unsure whether your items are permitted, contact the Sri Lankan Customs Authority through its dedicated website.

ADDRESSING PARCELS TO SRI LANKA

Sri Lankan addresses are similar to the UK’s, with a few small differences. Follow the guide below to make sure your parcel arrives safely and avoids delays:

The recipient’s name goes on the first line, with the house number and street name on the second line. If they live in an apartment, the house number goes before the building number, separated by a forward slash.

The city, state and postcode all appear on the third line.

For example:
Mr A Pewtey
1298 Yong An Road
COLOMBO 00600
SRI LANKA

Include your return address on the opposite side of the package to the delivery address.
