Customs requirements for delivery to Brazil

Before sending goods to Brazil, make sure you understand the nation’s import regulations.

All deliveries to Brazil from the UK require customs documentation. This will typically include a commercial invoice and, for higher-value shipments, an Import Declaration (DI). Your courier service can assist in providing these documents.

These must be completed accurately to avoid delays in shipping or – at worst – your parcel being returned to you or destroyed.

Include as much detail as possible when completing customs documents. For example, don’t simply write ‘clothes’. Instead, specify ‘2 red T-shirts, made in England’. This helps speed up customs checks when your package arrives in the country.

Additionally, recipients in Brazil must provide their CPF (Cadastro de Pessoas Físicas) for individuals or CNPJ (Cadastro Nacional da Pessoa Jurídica) for businesses. Without this information, customs clearance cannot proceed.

Some packages may be exempt from customs charges, such as personal effects, provided they meet specific criteria set by the Brazilian government. Unlike in the EU, Brazil does not offer a VAT-free threshold for imports, meaning duties and taxes may apply to all shipments.

Make sure your package qualifies for any duty exemptions by following the shipping instructions issued by the Brazilian customs authority. For detailed information, visit the Receita Federal website.

Some common mistakes include:

  • Not completing the paperwork correctly (putting information in the wrong place or missing sections entirely).
  • Trying to send prohibited or restricted items.
  • Being too vague or not providing enough detail – e.g. instead of just saying ‘clothes’, state ‘2 x men’s cotton shirts, made in Italy’.
  • Sending items without the correct licences and certificates.

PACK & SEND understands what it takes to meet the import criteria of Brazil, and we work closely with clients to make sure their cargo is fully compliant.

SHIPPING RESTRICTIONS TO BRAZIL

On top of Brazil’s unique import regulations, it’s important to understand which items are prohibited or restricted.

Always check restricted items and size or quantity allowances before sending, as prohibited items may be destroyed or returned to you at a charge.

Examples of restricted or prohibited items include:

  • Prohibited: Narcotics, counterfeit goods, and pirated media.
  • Restricted: Medicines, drones, certain food items, and agricultural goods, which may require permits or certificates.
  • Alcohol, Meat, milk, and dairy products are also subject to restrictions.

If you’re not sure whether your items are permitted, check the details on the Brazilian customs authority’s website.

ADDRESSING PARCELS TO BRAZIL

Brazilian addresses are similar to the UK’s, with a few small differences. Follow the guide below to make sure your parcel arrives safely and avoids delays:

The recipient’s name goes on the first line, with the street name and house number on the second line. The neighbourhood (bairro), city, state, and postcode appear on the third line.

For example:

Recipient’s name

Avenida Nipo-Brasileira 1995, Bairro Centro

Braganca Paulista – SP 12903-010

BRA

Include your return address on the opposite side of the package to the delivery address.
