Customs considerations when sending to Dubai

All international shipments from the UK require customs documents to be attached. This helps avoid delays at the border by letting customs officials know exactly what you’re sending.

Senders will need to complete a commercial invoice. When you work with a courier service like PACK & SEND, we provide this for you and even help you complete them.

When sending items to Dubai, you must complete these documents accurately and in full, or you risk your items being confiscated or returned to you at a charge.

This means providing plenty of detail about your items. For example, instead of stating ‘art’, put ‘16th-century oil painting in oak frame’.

Customs fees will be charged to the recipient in the UAE and will typically be 5 percent of the cost of the import. However, gifts valued up to AED 3,000 are exempt from fees, so you can send gifts to loved ones without landing them with an unexpected bill.

Import restrictions for Dubai

Like all countries, the UAE has unique regulations when it comes to what you can and cannot import.

Some items are strictly prohibited for import to Dubai and others require a specialised permit. Items that don’t meet the guidelines may be destroyed or returned to the sender at a charge.

Items that are restricted or prohibited from import to the UAE include:

  • Certain quantities of food and alcohol
  • Any publications or artwork that contradict the teachings of Islam
  • Medicines are strictly regulated in the UAE, so make sure to keep a valid prescription to hand

For more information, check with your courier provider or visit the UAE government’s dedicated web page.

Addressing parcels to Dubai

Make sure your international mail follows local addressing guidelines to avoid confusion or delays in delivery.

When addressing mail to Dubai, the receiver’s name goes on the first line, with the street name on the second line and the town on the third line. The emirate (e.g., Dubai) goes on the next line, followed by ‘UAE’.

For example:

Mr Fulan AlFulani
8-12 St. 55
Al Barsha 3
Dubai
UAE

Previously, all mail to the UAE was delivered to PO boxes. While this is no longer the case, some addresses may still include PO box details. This should appear in place of the building and street address.
