PACK & SEND are experts in navigating international customs, with over 30 years of experience shipping goods all across the world to destinations, such as Japan. This experience enables us to advise our customers on the restrictions that can apply within each country, advising you on best practices enabling smooth delivery.
Before you organise a shipment to Japan, make sure your items are permitted for import. Some items are strictly prohibited from import into Japan whilst others will require a specialised license or permit.
Items that are controlled include:
If you’re still unsure, consult the Japanese Embassy website or contact the Japanese postal service directly for clarification.
All international deliveries from the UK require customs documents. When you work with a courier service, they will be able to supply this commercial invoice form and help you complete it.
These forms must be completed accurately and in detail or you risk having your items confiscated at the border or returned to you in the UK at a charge.
This includes the name and address of the sender and recipient, plus details about the contents of the parcel, including a description of its items and their value.
Provide as much detail as possible about your items. For example, instead of writing ‘clothes’, put ‘2 red cotton t-shirts, made in England’.
Parcels valued up to JPY 10,000 are exempt from import taxes. Over this amount, the receiver will have to pay a 10% charge on the value of the shipment – so bear this in mind when sending valuable gifts to friends and family overseas.
Check Japan’s local addressing guidelines before sending parcels, or you risk your items being delayed or even returned to you.
The receiver’s name goes on the first line, with the building name and room number – or street address – on the second line.
The district code, block and city then appear on the third line, with the prefecture and a 7-digit postcode on the fourth line.
For example:
Mr Taro Yamada
Flora Kokubunji 21
1-4-5 Higashimotomachi, Kokubunji
Tokyo 185-0022
