Customs requirements for delivery to Portugal

As with all international deliveries, parcels to Portugal require customs documentation to be completed by the sender.

This will be either a commercial invoice. Your courier will be able to provide these for you and help you complete them accurately to avoid delivery delays.

Include as much detail as possible when completing customs documentation – if forms are incomplete or inaccurate, you risk your parcel being returned to you or even destroyed at the border.

For example, if you’re sending an ornamental gift, don’t simply write ‘ornament’. Instead, state ‘wooden elephant statue, approx. 15cm’.

If the parcel’s contents are valued over 22 EUR, the receiver will have to pay a VAT charge on the import and if its value exceeds 150 EUR, they’ll have to pay a customs duty charge, too.

Addressing mail to Portugal

It’s recommended to follow Portugal’s local addressing format to avoid delays or confusion in delivery.

The receiver’s name goes on the first line, with the street name appearing before the house number on the second line.

Postcodes work a little differently in Portugal – they feature 7 numbers, separated by a dash, followed by the territorial subdivision. This appears on the third line of the address.

For example:

Sr. Joao das Couves
R. Antonio Quadros 16
1600-875 Lisboa
PORTUGAL
