When importing goods from the USA to the UK, one crucial step many overlook is filing Electronic Export Information (EEI).
This mandatory data submission plays a key role in the US export process—especially for high-value, licensed, or controlled goods and helps prevent delays, fines, and customs issues when shipping internationally.

What Is Electronic Export Information?
EEI is a digital export declaration submitted to the US government through the Automated Export System (AES).
It details what’s being shipped, where it’s going, who’s sending it, and how much it’s worth.
This data is used by US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) and the Census Bureau to monitor trade, enforce export controls, and compile official export statistics.
The US Principal Party in Interest (USPPI)—usually the seller or exporter—is responsible for filing the EEI.
However, when a UK-based buyer arranges shipping through a freight forwarder (such as PACK & SEND), we may act as the authorised agent to handle EEI filing on your behalf.
Our team ensures all details are filed correctly and on time, so your shipment clears US export controls smoothly and avoids penalties.
Even though EEI is a US-side regulation, it can directly affect UK importers:
Delays at origin: Shipments may be held at US ports without a valid EEI submission
Refused exports: The US may deny clearance if items are controlled or declared improperly
Fines or legal liability: False or missing EEI can trigger civil or criminal penalties
Customs visibility: UK Customs may reference US export filings during clearance
Whether you’re importing electronics, vehicle parts, commercial goods, or high-value equipment, understanding the EEI requirement helps you plan smarter.
Failing to submit EEI when required, using incorrect Schedule B codes, or listing the wrong value can all result in significant delays or even seizure of goods at US export terminals.
These errors often happen when shipments are self-managed or handled by inexperienced brokers.
At PACK & SEND, our experienced team ensures every declaration is accurate, compliant, and aligned with both US export laws and UK import regulations—protecting your shipment from unnecessary risk.
Is Electronic Export Information (EEI) required for every shipment?
No, EEI is only required when a shipment from the US exceeds $2,500 USD in value per Schedule B code, or when the goods require a US export license or are subject to controls (such as military items or certain electronics). Smaller, low-risk shipments generally do not require EEI filing.
Can a UK importer file EEI on behalf of the US exporter?
Usually not. The EEI must be filed by the US Principal Party in Interest (USPPI) or their authorised US agent (like a freight forwarder). However, UK importers can coordinate with the exporter or agent to ensure the filing is done correctly. PACK & SEND can support this process as part of our end-to-end logistics service.
What happens if EEI is not filed when it should be?
If EEI is not submitted when legally required, the shipment may be delayed, held, or denied export clearance by US Customs. Additionally, incorrect or missing EEI filings can lead to fines or enforcement actions against the shipper. Ensuring EEI is submitted properly avoids delays and ensures compliance.
