Customs Requirements for Delivery to New Zealand

All international shipments from the UK require customs documentation. This will be a commercial invoice.

Your courier service will be able to provide these documents for you – and when you work with PACK & SEND, we’ll even help you complete all the paperwork to make sure your parcel meets New Zealand’s unique customs regulations, too.

Customs documents are checked on the border as they enter New Zealand, so make sure these are completed accurately and in as much detail as possible, to avoid delivery delays or even having your shipments rejected.

For example, instead of stating ‘art’ or ‘paintings’, describe the contents in more detail, like ‘3x watercolour paintings in black plastic frames’.

Prohibited items

It’s important to understand which items aren’t permitted for import to New Zealand – otherwise you risk having your parcels returned to you at a charge or even destroyed at the border.

Some prohibited imports to New Zealand include:

  • Food items, including cocoa beans, coffee, eggs, fruit and vegetables
  • Baby items, including cots and crayons
  • Pedal bicycles

In addition to these prohibited items, others require a specialised permit for importing. These items include certain medicines, foods and live animals.

Check out the New Zealand Post website for a full list of prohibited imports and if you’re still unsure, use their contact address for specific advice.

Addressing mail to New Zealand

New Zealand street addresses are similar to domestic UK addresses.

The receiver’s name goes on the first line, with the house number and street name on the second line, the suburb on the third line and the city and postcode on the last line.

For example:

Mr John Smith
10 Walter Street
Te Aro
Wellington 6011
NEW ZEALAND

However, rural addresses require a ‘Rural Delivery number’ on the third line.

For example:

Mr John Smith
80 Lepper Road
RD6
Inglewood 4386
NEW ZEALAND
