CUSTOMS REQUIREMENTS FOR INDIA

When sending parcels to India, you must be aware of their import regulations. This helps avoid complications with your package including having them returned to you or even seized and destroyed.

UK senders need to complete a commercial invoice for packages to pass through Indian customs. This is so border officials can correctly identify whether the items are subject to import duties and if so, how much they need to charge.

Certain items coming into India from the UK require licenses to pass through customs and the list is fairly extensive. This includes items like certain books, computer software, jewellery, leather goods, radios, shoes and certain textiles articles.

Mobile phones must have an IMEI (International Mobile Equipment Identification) Number that needs to be included in the commercial invoice

Some personal effects and items that are intended as gifts are not subject to customs charges, provided they follow India’s import guidelines. However, to make sure you qualify for the Customs Duty and VAT-free allowance, follow the shipping instructions laid out by the UK government.

Common mistakes include:

  • Not filling in the paperwork correctly (putting information in the wrong place or missing sections entirely)
  • Trying to send prohibited or restricted items
  • Being vague or not giving enough detail – e.g., instead of just saying ‘clothes’, state ‘2x men’s cotton shirts, made in England.’
  • Sending items without the correct licenses and certificates

PACK & SEND understands the ins and outs of Asia’s regional customs regulations, helping your packages arrive safely and without hassle.

During transit, we’ll inform you of any customs clearance issues, if they do arise. However, we work with you before shipping your package to avoid any problems.

ADDRESSING PACKAGES TO INDIA

Making sure you follow regional addressing guidelines is important for avoiding delivery delays.

In India, the receiver’s full name and flat or house number go on the first and second lines.

The third line is reserved for the road or apartment block name and the town, city or locality, and a 6-digit postcode goes on the fourth line.

It should look something like this:

Mr I. K. Taneja
Flat No. 100
Triveni Apartments
Pitam Pura
NEW DELHI 110034
INDIA
