Customs requirements for delivery to Australia

Our international delivery experts make sure your parcels meet Australia’s customs requirements, for fast and reliable delivery.

All deliveries to Australia from the UK require customs documentation. This will be a commercial invoice. Your courier service will be able to provide these documents for you.

These must be completed accurately to avoid delays in shipping or – at worst – your parcel being returned to you or destroyed.

Include as much detail as possible when completing customs documents. For example, don’t simply write ‘clothes’Instead, specify ‘2 red t-shirts, made in England’. This helps speed up customs checks when your package arrives in the country.

What can I send to Australia?

Australia is stricter than most countries when it comes to importing goods – this is to preserve the country’s natural wildlife and avoid introducing harmful chemicals.

So, it’s important to check your goods are permitted before sending them, as you could be charged for them to be returned or face losses if they’re destroyed.

Some items banned from import to Australia include:

  • Certain types of glazed ceramics
  • Some cosmetic products
  • Certain stationery like some pencils and paintbrushes
  • Some plants and plant products

Other items can only be imported with direct permission from the Australian government.

For peace of mind, check the complete list of prohibited items on the Australian government’s website.

Addressing parcels to Australia

Australian addresses are similar to the UK, with a few small differences. Follow the guide below to make sure your parcel arrives safely and avoids delays:

The recipient’s name goes on the first line, with the house number and street name on the second line. If they live in an apartment, the house number goes before the building number, separated by a slash.

The city, state and postcode all appear on the third line – with the state often abbreviated to a 3-digit code, e.g., ‘QLD’.

For example:

John Smith
10/45 George St.
LIDCOMBE NSW 2141

When shipping by air we expect it to take 5-7 days and by sea 12-14 weeks. Although whilst deliveries do generally take these times as a result of customs clearance these can differ between jobs.
